Mohinder N., the husband of the dentist found hanging in her house in Vijayanagar on Sunday, was arrested after her parents complained to the police he was responsible for her death.

The relatives of M.H. Sumathi (28), mother of a two-year-old girl, described her as a strong woman who had made enough adjustments in her husband’s family, even while complaining of “mental harassment” over trivial issues.

‘Restrictions’

They claimed there were restrictions on her movements.

A cousin, Karthik, recalled that she had been invited to his brother’s wedding about two weeks ago. “However, she was not allowed to attend the wedding and therefore we later called her for a family get-together on Sunday.”

According to Mr. Karthik, Sumathi had told her parents the previous day she would definitely come. “Therefore, we were all surprised when she did not turn up.”

He alleged that Mohinder was an unnaturally suspicious man.

The Vijayanagar police said that following his arrest, Mohinder, the manager of a private firm, admitted he and his wife had an argument on Sunday. “We have arrested him under section 306 of the IPC for abetment to suicide.”

Sumathi was found hanging in her house by her father-in-law while her husband was away from home. She is believed to been upset after a row with Mohinder over the family get-together.
