There have been writings galore by popular personalities on their mothers. Writer and publisher Chandrakantha Vaddu decided to put all those writings together in a volume called Ammana Nenapu . The second volume of the series – Avvana Nenapu II – is set for release.
Mr. Vaddu’s collections are a tribute to his mother who died last year. “Through the compilation of this book, I am trying to come to terms with my loss,” he says, in the introduction to the first volume.
In the first volume, writer Na. D’Souza, Tarini Chidananda (daughter of Kuvempu), Dr. Vamana Bendre (son of Da.Ra. Bendre), writers Vasudhendra and Dr. Sunanda Kulkarni, Dr. Umadevi and others paid tributes to their mothers. The second volume features articles by activist S.R. Hiremath, Meera Shankar (daughter of novelist Triveni), Arathi Venkatesh (daughter of writer Usha Navarathnaram), psychiatrist Dr. C.R. Chandrashekar, former minister Basavaraja Horatti and critic M.S. Ashadevi.
The latest volume has a number of off-beat narrations, like that of Vilasa Bai Rayannanavar, a Parijata artiste. Once a Devadasi , Vilasa Bai describes her mother as ‘demon’ who pushed her into becoming a Devadasi. Another unusual narrative is that of transgender Suneetha, who talks about her extraordinary mother who supported her throughout the period of gender transformation.
Theatre personality B. Jayashree and film maker Sumana Kittur will release the book on May 15 at Grantangana, City Central Library, RPC Layout at 5.30 p.m.
