In a series of incidents, tricksters diverted the attention of people and made away with cash worth Rs. 4 lakh and jewellery worth several lakhs since Tuesday night. The incidents happened in Indira Nagar, Ramamurthy Nagar, Tilak Nagar and Byatarayanapura police station limits.

Four persons on two motorcycles diverted the attention of K. Ashok Kumar, a mat supplier, near the Satellite Bus Station on Mysore Road on Tuesday night, grabbed Rs. 4 lakh from his scooter and fled.

According to Mr. Ashok Kumar (43), he was carrying the money in the tool box of his scooter. Two of the four accused rammed his vehicle near the satellite bus stand and entered into an altercation. The other two pretended to intervene in the altercation, when one of them purloined the cash from the tool box and fled, an officer at the Byatarayanapura police station said. Mr Kumar realised that he had been robbed only when he reached home.

In the other incidents on Wednesday, three men posing as policemen cheated three elderly women.

The imposters diverted the attention of Dhanalakshmi (60) in Indira Nagar, Madhu Srivasthava (62) of Vijaya Bank Layout near Horamavu and Krishnaveni (62) of Jayanagar 9th Block and decamped with their gold ornaments.

The accused reportedly told Dhanalakshmi that somebody had been murdered a few metres away and asked her to keep her ornaments inside a bag. Once this was done, they diverted her attention and made away with the bag.

Similarly, the trio approached Madhu and Krishnaveni in separate incidents and warned them of chain snatching in the vicinity. They suggested that the women remove their gold ornaments and keep them in their purses. They then successfully distracted the women, surreptitiously replaced the ornaments with stones, and fled. The two women found out they had been tricked only after reaching home, the police added.
