Members of the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti (MANS) will meet Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday and urge him to get the anti-superstition Bill passed in the ongoing session.
“This will be a befitting tribute to rationalist M.M. Kalburgi, who was murdered last August,” said Avinash Patil, executive president of MANS, on Monday.
Addressing presspersons after meeting like-minded groups in the State, Mr. Patil said: “We want the Chief Minister to consider and incorporate suggestions made by various progressive groups regarding anti-superstitions and get the Bill passed in this session.”
Following public anger against the earlier version of the anti-superstition Bill, the State government has decided to table a modified version by naming it ‘Karnataka Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Bill-2016’.
Earlier, the government had drafted ‘The Evil, Inhuman and Superstitious Practices Prevention Bill’, but it has now decided to omit the word ‘superstitious’.
Reacting to this, Mr. Patil said: “We will not intervene into minute details. We want the government to pass the Bill this time.”
Savita Shete, MANS secretary, said the members would also appeal to the Chief Minister to expedite probe into the Kalburgi murder case. “It is unfortunate that 10 months after the murder, the Karnataka police have not arrested the mastermind,” she said.
“We are also protesting against the lethargic approach of the agencies probing the murder of Narendra Dabholkar,” she said.
