Deputy Chairman of the State Planning Board D.H. Shankaramurthy was on Thursday conferred the national-level Parisara Ratna Award, jointly instituted by the Kuvempu University and the Academy of Commonwealth Education and Humanities Studies, Bangalore, for his service to the environment.

Ramesh Zalki, Principal Secretary, Department of Labour, was also presented the award by Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University B.S. Sherigar and the academy president C. Jagannath. The award function was held at the Minister's chamber in Vikasa Soudha.

The function, which was scheduled to be held last year on the occasion of the National Environment Festival at Shimoga was postponed owing to the sudden demise of the then Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.

The State-level awards were presented to S. Raghavendra Babu, ayurvedic physician, and Anuradha Swamy, environmentalist.

Mr. Zalki released a 350-page ‘career guide' published by the university for the benefit of graduates in all subjects, including engineering and medicine. Commending the university for the work, Mr. Shankaramurthy said that the guide would help in transforming graduates into ‘marketable commodities' in the corporate parlance. He also pointed out that there were hardly a few hundred doctoral degree holders and researchers among the 17,500 lecturers in the engineering colleges across the State, who could guide students.
