The one-man committee appointed by the State government to oversee admissions to professional colleges has received around 20 complaints against some colleges for charging additional fee other than the fee prescribed.
P. Venkataramiah, a former vice-chancellor who heads the committee, said 15 of the complaints were against engineering colleges and the remaining against medical colleges. “Nineteen of them are private colleges and I have received one against a government college in Shimoga,” he added.

M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, PES Institute of Technology and Sambhram Institute of Technology are among the leading colleges against whom the committee has received complaints.
Following these complaints, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) had issued a circular last week to all the colleges stating they cannot charge an additional fee apart from the fee charged by the Karnataka Examinations Authority.
Mr. Venkataramiah pointed out that the additional fee varied and colleges were charging extra for facilities like internet, laptop and for extra curricular activities.
He made it clear the colleges should have apprised students about the additional amounts before the counselling process started and given the option to choose the facilities they wanted. He said he would try to resolve the issue by initiating a dialogue between both the parties. To a question, he said it was too early to comment on any possible action against the colleges. He added: “The names of students who send in their complaints will be kept confidential.”
