Panel on lake encroachments holds first meeting

November 13, 2014 12:49 pm | Updated 12:49 pm IST - Bengaluru:

The Legislative Committee on encroachment of lakes in and around Bengaluru will be submitting report in three months, Congress MLA K.B. Koliwad, who heads the committee, has said. The committee had its first meeting here on Wednesday.

The MLA regretted that the recommendations of an earlier committee set up in 1985 to study encroachments, headed by Lakshman Rau, had been completely ignored. The 11-member panel headed by him, said Mr. Koliwad, would be visiting the lakes and studying documents before compiling the report.

The former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who is among the members of the committee, alleged that poor encroachers were being targeted in the name of clearing encroachments while the “real land sharks” were being let off. He would discuss this in the meeting, he added.
