The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has issued summons to the management of a private school that had allegedly urged the parents of a UKG student enrolled under the RTE quota to take a transfer certificate (TC) as the academic performance of the child was not satisfactory.
Earlier this week, The Hindu had reported how the management had allegedly told the parents they were not happy with the child’s performance in the tests. The child had got a C plus. When the parents refused to take a TC, the school reportedly asked the child to take another test.
The parents had approached the RTE Students’ and Parents’ Association who had later filed a complaint with the jurisdictional Block Education Officer alleging harassment of the child.
Govinde Gowda, BEO North Range 1, also sent an order to the school on Saturday urging them to ensure that the child continues in the same school.
Violation of RTE Act
Experts had pointed out that this is a violation of the RTE Act, 2009, that states that no child shall be detained till the completion of elementary education and it was the duty of the local authority to ensure that the child under the quota is not discriminated against.
