In view of complaints by passengers of drivers refusing to ply or demanding excess fare, the city traffic police carried out an inspection on Monday between 5 a.m. and 5 p.m.
A total of 5,172 cases were booked against drivers and 934 autos were seized.
Traffic police said that the complaints were received through phone calls and social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. Over 500 police personnel were involved in the exercise.
As many as 1,669 cases, the highest number, were booked in the South East division. Officials said that the licences of these auto drivers could be recommended for cancellation, if required.
The drivers of seized autos must appear in court and pay a fine, which can extend up to Rs. 3,000, to get back their vehicles, the police officers said.
