Though the protest against the EPF Scheme was primarily led by garment workers, other labourers, mainly from manufacturing and engineering units in Peenya Industrial Area (PIA), joined them on Tuesday.
Even on Monday, work was affected in some garment factories in PIA when workers remained indoors but refused to work. On Tuesday, all garment workers in the area took to the streets.
Workers from manufacturing and engineering units in the area also came out on the streets. This only swelled the number of protesters in north Bengaluru.
Monday’s protests acted as a catalyst in educating other workers in PIA about EPF rules.
V. Srinivasulu (44), who works in an engineering unit, said that earlier they neither knew of the new EPF norms nor how it affected them. “Following the protest on Monday, we learnt how we too will suffer. So we joined the protest on Tuesday,” he said.
