Oscar Fernandes files papers

AICC Secretary and former Union Minister Oscar Fernandes on Saturday filed nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections to be held from Karnataka on June 17.

Mr. Fernandes told presspersons that the high command would decide fielding of the second candidate on Monday. Elections would be held for four Rajya Sabha seats. Asked about the alliance between the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) on supporting the second candidate, he said it would be decided in two days. Monday is he last day for filing nominations.

The former BJP president Venkaiah Naidu and the former MP Ayanur Manjunath on Wednesday filed their nominations.

Given its numerical strength in the Legislative Assembly, the BJP can win two of the four Rajya Sabha seats for which the elections were being held.

Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah too declined to comment on the Congress support to be given to the second candidate.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president R. V. Deshpande, KPCC Working President D.K. Shivakumar and a few MLAs were present when Mr. Fernandes field his nomination papers.
