Okalipuram residents' ire over irregular water supply

April 13, 2010 04:51 pm | Updated 04:51 pm IST - Bangalore:

Motorists coming from Rajajinagar towards the Central Business District (CBD) were stuck in a traffic jam for more than an hour on the busy Okalipuram Main Road on Monday morning as residents blocked the Main Road and all connecting roads to protest over the irregular water supply to Okalipuram.

Upset with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) for not addressing their water woes, hundreds of residents, holding empty pots, buckets and containers, raised slogans against board officials and demanded regular supply to their area.

The residents blocked the stretch from 5th Main in Okalipuram up to R.R. Kalyan Mantap on the Main Road from 9 a.m. till noon.

“We are suffering for the last six months. Although water is supplied once in two days, it is hardly for an hour. That apart, the pressure is very low. We struggle to make ends meet and cannot afford to buy water. Repeated complaints to the officials have been in vain,” said Mahendra Prasad, a resident.

He said following the protest, the officials assured them their problem would be solved. “If it recurs, we will intensify our agitation,” he added.
