For the first time in the country, a Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) is being conducted for admission to a select seven central universities from this academic year.
About 1,500 seats in 41 undergraduate, postgraduate and integrated courses in seven of the 12 newly established central universities of Karnataka, Bihar, Jharkhand, Kashmir, Kerala, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu will be filled up through CUCET-2010 to be held on June 19 and 20 in about 30 examination centres spread across the country.
‘Not a single test'
Though it is a common entrance test for all seven universities, there will not be one single test for all the courses. The students will have to appear for two different tests if they apply for two courses belonging to different streams.
The CUCET will have about three testing slots of about two hours each on both days of the examination and the students can chose the slot suitable for them if they are applying for multiple courses. The courses being offered by each university are available on the university website.
Open to all
Elaborating on this, A.M. Pathan, Vice-Chancellor of Central University of Karnataka, Gulbarga, which is the convener institution to hold CUCET, said that CET is a facilitation mechanism through which students residing in any part of the country can apply through one common application form and the convener institution will process it online for generating admission tickets, allowing them to take tests in any of the examination centres.

However, the entrance test schedule matrix will be drawn up only after processing the applications and it will be put up on the website.
Format for test
Stating that it is for the first time in India that a CET is being held for a group of central universities, Prof. Pathan said the CUCET-2010 will have three parts — multiple choice questions related to basic understanding of the country; testing of communication, writing and analytical skills; and specific subject-related questions to which the student seeks admission.
“As this is a first CET for central universities, we will improve it the next year depending on our experience, and we hope the remaining new central universities may join our group in the next academic year,” said Prof. Pathan.
Applications
He said the students can apply to the course online through the website: www.cucet.ac.in and generate admission tickets online, and they will have to check the admission-related details like eligibility criteria for different courses on the websites of respective universities through links which have been provided on the website.
Also, students can download the application from the website and send the completed applications to the CUK, Gulbarga on or before May 27. The details of examination and other fees, examination centres, are available on the website. Conducting CET at the proposed examination centres will be subject to number of students.
