The High Court of Karnataka on Monday ordered issue of notice to the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on a PIL petition questioning the civic body’s decision to construct a stadium at a playground at 6th Cross, Indiranagar 1st Stage.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Subhro Kamal Mukherjee and Justice P.S. Dinesh Kumar passed the order on a petition filed by the Indiranagar 1st Stage League Residents’ Welfare Association.

Contending that the BBMP council’s decision to construct a stadium in place of the open playground goes against the provisions of the Karnataka Parks, Play fields and Open Space (Preservation and Regulation) Act, 1985, the association has questioned the tender invited by the BBMP on June 28, 2017 for an approximate cost of ₹5 crore.

Trees vs canteen

In another case, the Bench ordered issue of notice to the BBMP and other authorities on a PIL petition seeking a direction against the cutting of trees grown in and around six acres of land at Rajajinagar for the construction of an Indira Canteen.

Petitioners Geetha Misra and others, while pointing out that the land has had naturally grown trees from the past 60 years, have claimed that their calls to maintain this land as a natural tree park have fallen on deaf ears for years.
