The Union government is planning to set up a trauma centre here to reduce the pressure on NIMHANS so that the country’s premier medical institute can focus on diseases related to mental health and neurosciences, according to Minister of State for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil.

Dr. Patil, who is also vice-chairman of NIMHANS, told reporters here on Tuesday that the State government’s participation in setting up the proposed trauma centre was confined to providing land. “We have handed over the land to the authorities,” the Minister said. He noted that most of the cases being treated at NIMHANS were trauma related. There was a need to allow the institute to focus on handling mental illness cases, he observed.
