New BMTC website makes travel easy

Travel Planer integrates bus routes, timetable to provide complete information

May 15, 2013 09:23 am | Updated 09:23 am IST - BANGALORE:

Commuting by bus in Bangalore has just become easy with the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) launching its all new website with the main feature of trip planner that interlinks the routes, timetable and bus stops.

BMTC’s earlier website was difficult for passengers to plan their journey or get the actual timetable.

The new website — www.mybmtc.com — has addressed this lacuna almost completely with the Trip Planner section where one can get details of bus routes, timetable, aerial distance and approximate fare.

If no direct service is available, the site suggests connecting routes to the passenger.

BMTC Director (IT) Kumar Pushkar told The Hindu that BMTC wanted to make the website dynamic with Trip Planner.

All Form IVs (details of each trip and timetable on every route) have been computerised.

Any modifications to Form IV have to be made on the portal only, thereby ensuring automatic updates.

BMTC operates 6,100 buses on 2,400 routes which have been digitised to give actual information and display on Google-based maps. Even the route map is available on the site, Mr. Pushkar said.

The mobile version of the site is slightly different and focuses more on the Trip Planner. Every page of the website is in English and Kannada.

Another important section is the provision to provide feedback and complaints, which will be acknowledged through mail and SMS. Complaints will be attended to immediately and the commuter informed about the action taken.

Capacity enhancement

Initially, the site was designed to take about 500 simultaneous hits. However, within a few days of its recent launch, it was clear that that wasn’t enough and so BMTC is planning to increase the number of concurrent users to 5,000, Mr. Pushkar said.

BMTC Chief Traffic Manager (Operations) Dastagir Sharief said that the BMTC is in the process of constantly updating and improving the website. Nearly 20 personnel from its traffic department have been working with the technical team to provide accurate information. The website provides the option to print timetables, details of bus stops and routes and the map, he added.

The timetable section provides information about all the routes — from Route No. 1 to 601 to other categories of services, including Vajra, Vayu Vajra, Big 10 and Feeder Services.
