A baby hippopotamus was born at the Bannerghatta Biological Park on Wednesday. According to a press release here, the baby hippopotamus is healthy and weighs around 40 kg.

The mother, Kaveri, is four years old, while the father, Naga, is around eight years old. Both Kaveri and Naga were born at the zoo as well. With the new addition, the hippopotamus population in the zoo has gone up to eight.

Two hippopotamuses, Karthik and Sitha, were brought to Bannerghatta from the Mysore zoo in 1997. Since then, the zoo unit of the Bannerghatta Biological Park has been successfully breeding the animals, the release added.
