National anthem at every screening

Several film buffs were irked by the national anthem being played at the beginning of every screening, despite the Supreme Court recently making it optional.

The apex court had ruled on a plea by the Kodungallur Film Society, a film festival organiser from Kerala, against playing of the national anthem at every screening.

Software engineer Avinash Kammannanavar, who watched five films, requested the organisers not to play it at the start of every film.

Many fans also took objection to the rendering of the anthem, which they said was not the standard tune, but a different composition.

However, festival director Rajendra Singh Babu said they had little choice in the matter as it was a decision taken by the venue host, PVR Cinemas.
