The driver of a container ferrying cars lost control of the heavy vehicle and collided with a truck carrying oxygen cylinders and other vehicles at Ramamurthy Nagar on Saturday afternoon.
The container toppled over in the middle of the busy Outer Ring Road around 3 p.m. causing a major traffic jam for over 90 minutes. Fifteen traffic wardens were deployed to ensure that the situation did not worsen.
The jam would have been a lot worse otherwise, said a senior police officer.
According to the police, the container was heading from Chennai towards Faridabad. When the driver, Ravindra Singh, tried to overtake the other truck near ACR Convention Hall, there was a collision.
The container hit the divider and overturned.
The K.R. Puram traffic police, with the help of fire and emergency service personnel, pulled the container truck to the side of the road with the help of a crane.
Luckily, the oxygen cylinders were intact.
Miraculous escape
Two motorcycles were following the truck. The riders lost control and came under the wheels of the container. Alert passers-by rushed to their help. Both bikers sustained multiple injuries, but are said to be out of danger.
Traffic disrupted
Traffic movement was disrupted for over two hours. The police have booked a case of rash and negligent driving against Ravindra Singh, who was injured and admitted to a nearby hospital. “We are waiting for him to recover before questioning him,” said the police.
