In the future, it may be possible for you to take the metro back home from work after 10 p.m.

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) has expressed willingness to operate Namma Metro past the current closing time if enough people come forward and commit to using the service.

Ever since the entire Purple Line was thrown open, there has been a lot of demand for operating metro beyond the current deadline, till 11 p.m.

However, officials said without adequate demand, it would not be financially sensible to extend services.

Solution

A possible solution would be if companies that have employees working late into the night come forward and request for extension of services.

“We did a similar thing on the Green Line when garment factories in Peenya came forward and asked us to extend services. We have 800 people who use the last train on that line, so it is feasible. If companies in Bagmane tech park and ITPL come forward and ask us, we can even operate services till midnight, as we do on IPL match days,” said BMRCL spokesman U.A. Vasanth Rao.

At present, the number of commuters on the Purple Line goes down after 9 p.m., and there are 6,000–8,000 users in the last hour of operations. But these statistics need further study before a call is made on extending services regularly.

“It is too early as we have to find out people’s travelling habits. If there is a demand, we will consider it and will coordinate with Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation to operate feeder services during the extended hours as well,” Mr. Rao said.
