The Bharatiya Janata Party staged a protest here on Monday demanding the resignation of Yeshwanthpur councillor Munirathna, who had reportedly taken the contract for road-widening work on Bellary Road where 17-year-old Sanjana Singh died when a wall collapsed on her.
It had been reported earlier that the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had filed a case against Mr. Munirathna and his partner G. Humesh Kumar of Ramchandra Constructions, which had carried out the construction of the compound wall of the Veterinary College.
All those responsible for the death of Sanjana, including the engineers, should be blacklisted and suspended, said ruling party leader B.S. Satyanarayana.
Mr. Munirathna told presspersons that the compound wall was not built by him. “I was given the contract for widening the road, not the compound wall,” he said.
Charging the protestors with ignorance, he said there was a difference between a retaining wall and a compound wall.
“I had built a retaining wall of about 4.5 feet according to the norms. It was raised to nine feet later by including a pipeline without considering the strength of the foundation,” he said.
Displaying “documents of proof”, M. Nagaraj, Leader of the Opposition in the BBMP Council said if found guilty, the Congress would waste no time in removing Munirathna.
“We have documents to prove that Humesh Kumar built the wall while Munirathna carried out the road-widening work,” he said.
