Nine screens of PVR multiplex besides 54 shops at Phoenix MarketCity mall in Mahadevapura limits here were sealed here on Monday for not having obtained trade licences from the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

K.N. Devaraj, Joint Commissioner of the Mahadevapura zone, said a team comprising the deputy health officer and the health inspector of the zone inspected the mall and sealed the shops.

Although there was initial resistance, shopkeepers had no choice but to allow the officers to close their premises, an official said.

Mr. Devaraj added, “The owners seemed to be ignorant about the licences…This drive was conducted to send a strong message to other business establishments to obtain trade licenses.”

A press release issued by the BBMP said officials were going to inspect eight more malls and business establishments in the zone. The release added that the shops and the multiplex at Phoenix MarketCity could function once they paid the requisite fees and submit applications for fresh trade licences.
