A 26-year-old software engineer sustained severe head injuries after he slipped from the motorcycle while negotiating a pothole on the busy road near Aravind Circle near Krishna Sevashram hospital in Jayanagar on Sunday evening.

The victim, Ram Kumar, a native of Coimbatore and employee of a private firm, was returning home from work when the incident occurred. Traffic was disrupted as Ram Kumar slipped and sustained head injuries and had an epileptic attack and was writhing in pain. An anxious crowd gathered around Ram Kumar.

Meanwhile, G.T. Subhash, former dean and director of Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, who was passing-by in an autorickshaw rushed to his help and with the help of three others, carried him to Krishna Sevashrama hospital from where he was rushed to NIMHANS in an ambulance for further treatment.

Recalling the incident, Dr. Subhash said that though people gathered around and started giving suggestions no one came forward to help him. However, rushing him to the hospital within the golden hour saved the life of Ram Kumar, who is said to be recovering.

Residents complained that they had made several complaints to the BBMP about the pothole several times, but nothing had been done. Since the pothole posed a threat to motorists, the residents had filled it with debris, but due to the rain it was washed away and emerged bigger in size.

The Jayanagar police have taken up a case of self-accident and are waiting for Ram Kumar’s recovery to record his statement. “We will take action based on the statement of Ram Kumar,” a senior police officer said.
