A 28-year-old woman and her one-and-a-half-year-old child were run over by a speeding train at the railway line near Hoody Gate on Monday.
The accident took place when Khushboo Devi attempted to pick up her child’s slipper from the track, while running across a manned level crossing. Ms. Devi was accompanying her husband, Pandey, and two children to the K.R. Puram Railway Station to board a train to Patna. They left their home in Sadaramangala on a cycle around 5 a.m.
S.N. Siddramappa, Superintendent of Police (Railways), Bengaluru city, said the manned level crossing was closed, but the family went ahead as they were in a hurry to catch the train.
Mr. Pandey lugged their luggage on the cycle along with the couple’s son and squeezed through the gate. As Ms. Devi tried to run across with the baby in her arms, the child’s slipper fell down. Even as her husband warned her of the oncoming train, she tried to pick up the slipper. The mother and child were killed on the spot.
Sanjeev Agarwal, Divisional Railway Manager, South Western Railway, Bengaluru Division, described the incident as “unfortunate”, but said it could not be called an accident related to the railways as trains have right of way and people have to take care at level crossings.
Even as her husband warned her of the oncoming train, Khushboo Devi stopped to pick up her child’s slipper, which fell on the track
