Returning home after a hard day’s work at the Vani Vilas Hospital, security guard Lakshmi didn’t think twice when a fellow passenger asked her if she would hold her new-born baby. Minutes later, she was shocked to find that the woman had disappeared into the crowd in the jam-packed bus.
Passengers in the bus tried frantically to locate the mother of the baby girl, who it is assumed had alighted the bus at the previous stop.
Lakshmi handed over the baby to the J.J. Nagar police while filing a complaint and the baby was referred to the BOSCO child helpline.
BOSCO Childline staff later subjected the baby to medical examination before handing it over to Shishu Mandira Home for abandoned minors.
“The baby was healthy and hardly three-day-old. We are checking with the hospitals to ascertain the identity of the parents,” the J.J. Nagar police said adding that the police are also checking with their counterparts to ascertain whether any missing complaint has been filed, the police said.
BOSCO Mane coordinator Jenifer Y. said this is the fourth abandoned baby girl found by the childline since August. “In the last month, we received three other newborn baby girls from different parts of the city,” Ms. Jennifer told The Hindu .
