A month after a fairly discreet onset in the State, the monsoon finally made its presence felt in Bangalore with thick cloud cover and daylong drizzle on Wednesday.
An upper air cyclonic circulation off the coast of Andhra Pradesh was responsible for the rain. Bangalore, other parts of south Karnataka and the coast would receive heavier spells of rain in the next two to three days, said B. Puttanna, director of the met centre. “We are expecting it to intensify into a low pressure system by Friday and this will bring in heavy rainfall, especially along the coast.” The monsoon is going to get progressively intense in the coming months, according to the met centre.
The city typically receives just 89 mm of rain in June, compared with 109 mm in July. September is the wettest month for Bangalore, as on an average, it records 260 mm of rainfall. This month, the monsoon caught up with north Karnataka districts that had hardly received any rainfall in June. Other places in Karnataka also received significant rainfall on Wednesday. Parts of Bidar received 70 mm of rain, while Mangalore and several places in Bagalkot received 40 mm each.
