A 14-year-old boy committed suicide at Venkatappa Layout in Girinagar here on Friday.

According to the police, the boy took the extreme step after he he failed in the recent Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) class 10 examination.

He is survived by his 18-year-old brother, Sharath, who works as a driver.

The two brothers lived on their own after their father died three years ago and their mother abandoned them. On Friday, the 14-year-old boy, who attended a school in Hosakerehalli and also worked in an electrical shop, hanged himself when his brother was away at work. However, the incident came to light only in the evening when Sharath returned home from work.

In his statement to the police, Sharath said his brother had been suffering from depression after he failed in all the subjects in the recent SSLC examination.

The Girinagar police have registered a case of unnatural death.
