Traffic on Millers Road was affected on Saturday after a portion of the road caved in. Due to the damage, water supply to several areas in east Bangalore has also been cut off.

To facilitate repairs, the road will be closed for traffic for at least one week.

Movement of heavy traffic on the road, one side of which has been dug up for remodelling the storm-water drain, and rainfall are believed to have loosened the soil, resulting in the incident around 2.30 a.m.

Sources in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) said it would take at least one-and-a-half months to complete the work.

BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah, who visited the spot along with Additional Commissioner of Traffic Praveen Sood, directed officials to asphalt Thimmaiah Road and Millers Tank Bund Road to enable smooth traffic movement.

Water supply hit

After earth caved in, two pipelines that supply water from BWSSB's ground-level reservoir at High Grounds to areas that fall in Coles Park service station limits cracked and collapsed in the early hours of Saturday.

Water supply has been cut off to Bharatinagar, St. John's Church Road, St. John's Road, Shivana Chetty Garden, Nehru Puram, Cox Town and surrounding areas.

A top official of the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board clarified that recently laid pipelines had not been damaged in the incident. “Old cast-iron pipes of 300-mm and 750-mm diameter have been damaged (to a length of 6 m). Work on replacing them with mild steel pipes has started and is likely to be completed by Sunday morning. Normal supply will be restored from Sunday,” the official said.

Traffic diversions

The High Grounds traffic police have announced traffic diversions with effect from Sunday in and around Vasanthnagar, Cunningham Road and Millers Road.

BMTC buses and heavy motor vehicles going towards Jayamahal and Bamboo Bazaar from Cunningham Road will have to turn right at Geneva House and proceed on Millers Tank Bund Road. After joining Thimmaiah Road, vehicles have to turn left to join Udaya TV Junction. Other vehicles can go towards Avinash Petrol Bunk from Chandrika Hotel Junction. The road between Avinash Petrol Bunk and Chandrika Hotel Junction has been converted into a one-way.

There will be no left turn at Avinash Petrol Bunk; vehicles will have to turn right towards Mount Carmel College, go on Vasanthnagar 8th Main to join Millers Road.
