Instead of monitoring the weather conditions in the State, officials at the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) were busy solving another mystery: the disappearance of a battery installed a few days ago in its power generator room on Palace Road.
It was later revealed that the battery had been stolen, prompting officials to write to the headquarters seeking round-the-clock security for the office. The officials are also contemplating installing CCTV cameras on the premises.
Meteorologist Ramdoss N. told the police that the theft had occurred on Tuesday night and came to light the next day when staff reached the office. Officials said the 12 volts battery, worth ₹14,700, was installed a few days ago with a diesel generator.
The theft also brought to light the fact that despite being among the most important installations in the city, the IMD does not have security cover.
Sundar Metri, Director, IMD, Bengaluru said that work did not get affected due to the theft, as it was a power backup device. “We have installed a new battery for now and have written to the department head for round-the-clock security cover for the building,” he said.
