People faced hardships after bus services to Tamil Nadu were cancelled on Saturday following a bandh call given in that State over the proposed Mekedatu dam project.
Bus-stands in the city wore a deserted look as the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation cancelled over 100 schedules. The services, however, resumed at 6 p.m.
Loss to KSRTC
KSRTC Chief Traffic Manager Sangappa said the corporation incurred a loss of Rs. 10 lakh in the wake of the cancellation of services.
Meanwhile, Kannada organisations staged a dharna outside Nataraj theatre and forced the cancellation of all shows of the Tamil film Valiyavan that was released on Friday. Activists of the organisations staged a dharna outside the theatre and raised slogans against the Tamil Nadu government. They burnt an effigy, defaced the posters, and blocked traffic on the Seshadripuram Main Road. The police took many people into preventive detention.
Earlier, Kannada Chaluvali Vatal Paksha leader Vatal Nagaraj led a protest at the Mysore Bank circle, opposing the Tamil Nadu government’s opposition to the Mekedatu project. Additional Commissioner of Police (West) Alok Kumar said that security was provided in areas where Tamils resided.
