Mehdi Masroor Biswas appeared in court on Thursday sporting a week-old stubble wearing a track pant and a T-shirt. He was flanked by a team of police personnel. He spoke in a calm tone to the judge, Somaraj. To specific questions on police harassment, he said he was allowed to sleep and given food on time.

City police sought 25 days’ custody of the IS tweeter for questioning, but Mehdi’s lawyer Jaffer Shah opposed it. Following arguments, judge Somaraj remanded Mehdi to 15 days’ police custody and instructed the police to avoid interrogating him from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.

Mr. Shah told The Hindu that he had no opportunity to speak to his client yet. He said he would shortly move a bail application and has sought permission from the court to meet Mehdi.

Mamtaz Begum, Mehdi's mother told The Hindu that they are confident of their son's innocence and reposed faith in the judicial system.
