Mayor election: hearing next on Friday

July 09, 2013 12:30 pm | Updated November 16, 2021 08:56 pm IST - Bangalore

The State government on Monday sought a clarification from the Karnataka High Court on whether it could withdraw the notification issued in February, reserving posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor to different categories.

The clarification was sought owing to pendency of litigations related to the reservation of the posts and an interim order issued by the High Court directing the State not to hold elections until further orders.

However, Justice L. Narayanaswamy refused to pass any order clarifying the legal position while orally telling the government counsel that it was left to the government to take a decision. The court also extended the earlier interim order.

Two petitions have challenged reservation of Mayor’s post for ‘general’ category and Deputy Mayor’s post for ‘backward class A’ category. Further hearing has been adjourned till July 11.
