Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana lambasted Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials for their lackadaisical attitude towards ensuring effective solid waste management.
Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, the Mayor claimed that much of the garbage problem could be resolved if officials pulled up their socks and monitored clearance within their jurisdictions.
“Often, citizens call us (elected representatives) to complain about irregular garbage clearance and black spots. The BBMP officials, who are supposed to monitor their areas, are least bothered. Why can they not take the initiative and direct the contractor or other officials concerned about this themselves?”
Mr. Sathyanarayana said the BBMP would soon hand over responsibility of waste management to the Health Department from the Engineering Department. “[Then] health inspectors will be responsible for solid waste management within their jurisdictions.”
Mr. Sathyanarayana said a city-based company had come out with a waste segregation and processing machine, with capacity of one tonne to five tonnes.
The machine will be put to test on October 30 at Peenya Industrial Area ward, and on November 7 at Dharmarayaswamy temple ward. “If it proves to be satisfactory, we will install it at the segregation points that are already set up in the wards,” he said.
This, he claimed, would bring down pressure on landfills.
