The health condition of Mariam Kouser, the three-year-old girl who suffered brain damage owing to alleged medical negligence at the Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedics, Jayanagar, is critical, according to doctors. Sudarshan Ballal, Medical Director of Manipal Hospitals, said there was no major change in her condition. “She might have to be on the ventilator for a longer time for which she needs a tracheostomy. The doctors attending on her at Malathi Manipal Hospital have spoken to the family about it,” he said.

Meanwhile, the doctors entrusted with the task of inquiring into the alleged medical negligence by staff of the Sanjay Gandhi institute, where she was admitted on December 13 for treatment of a fracture in her left hand, have started the probe.

Minister for Health U.T. Khader said the probe report is expected in 10 days.

FIR filed

Reshma Rafiq, girl’s aunt, said the family had filed a FIR with the Tilak Nagar police on Thursday charging the doctors of Sanjay Gandhi hospital with medical negligence. “We had not filed a compliant till now because we wanted her to recover first,” she said.
