The committee looking into the case of Mariam Kouser, the three-year-old who is in coma, has found negligence by doctors who initially operated upon her at the State-run Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedic (SGITO).
The committee, led by Health Director Geeta Nyamgoudar, submitted its report on Friday to Health Commissioner V.B. Patil. The report is now with the Principal Secretary (Health and Family Welfare).
Sources in the department told The Hindu on Monday that the committee had found that two of the four doctors involved in the operation at SGITO were directly responsible for the girl’s comatose condition now. As the doctors had been recruited on a temporary basis, the department was studying the legal options before it.
Health Minister U.T. Khader is likely to issue the order initiating action against the doctors on January 10, after the return of Principal Secretary Madan Gopal, who is away in Delhi.
Meanwhile, the girl, who had shown some signs of improvement, is said to have taken a turn for the worse since Sunday. Doctors treating her at Dr. Malathi Manipal Hospital said her blood pressure was low and she had caught an infection. A blood test report is expected on Wednesday. The girl had been put off the ventilator two days ago.
Mariam had met with an accident on December 13 and fractured her left elbow, for which she was operated on at SGITO on December 16; after this she went into coma.
