Hundreds of farmers from eight districts gathered to protest against the Land Acquisition Bill here on Friday.

Demanding immediate cancellation of the Bill, farmers from nine organisations, including the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha and Karnataka Dalit Rakshana Vedika, announced a protest march from Nargund, Gadag district, to Bengaluru between April 8 and 28. “Not only farmers, but people who consume the produce have a duty to join the march,” said K.S. Puttannaiah, president, KRRS.

Speaking on the sidelines, Pundalika Halambi, president, Karnataka Sahitya Parishat, said that along the course of the march, farmers will to put pressure on the Centre to take impromptu action. However, Mr. Halambi said farmers will ensure that everything is done in a peaceful way.

According to the farmers, the Bill will not only waste cultivable land but will take away many jobs created by agriculture. — Staff Reporter
