August 27, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 05:38 pm IST - BENGALURU:

With no compensation having reached the families of the two workers, who lost their lives while cleaning a clogged manhole last week, the National Safai Karmachari Commission has set a deadline of August 28. Prasanna and Sethu suffocated while cleaning the manhole outside CPWD quarters in Jayamahal.

M. Shivanna, chairman of the commission, who spoke to representatives of various departments on Wednesday, said he ordered the CPWD superintending engineer to hand over the cheques on Thursday, but the engineer requested one more day.

“One victim belonged to SC category. He is entitled to Rs. 7.5 lakh and Rs. 10 lakh, according to the SC judgment. The other victim too will get Rs. 10 lakh compensation,” he said. He also said the departments had been warned against engaging people for manual scavenging.
