The communities living around landfills in Mandur have threatened a hunger strike from Friday if prohibitory orders imposed in the area are not revoked.
Gopal Rao, a resident, said that with Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in force, village residents are not even able to meet to discuss the next course of action or protest against the dumping of garbage in the landfills there.
A few village residents met freedom fighter H.S. Doreswamy on Wednesday and decided to go on a fast. While stating that the protest would not be called off, Mr. Doreswamy said that the residents are even ready for a fast unto death.
Prohibitory ordersMeanwhile, Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana has stated that the prohibitory orders may be revoked after the Chief Minister meets the residents of Mandur. “The meeting was supposed to have taken place on Wednesday. However, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is in New Delhi to discuss the Cauvery issue with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting will take place on his return to Bangalore,” he said.
He assured residents that not only would he visit Mandur once a week, but will also spend a night in the village, as per their demand.
