The garbage problem may erupt again in the city, what with the local community around the Mandur landfill threatening to prevent dumping from Monday.
The community had agreed to allow the dumping till the end of January 2013 following a conciliation meeting with local MLA and Health Minister Aravind Limbavali and BBMP officials.
The community members, however, are now demanding a written assurance from the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) saying none of the BBMP representatives, neither Commissioner Rajneesh Goel nor city Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy, had signed the minutes of the meeting. They also charged that the civic authority, which had assured them of measures to improve infrastructure on the landfill’s periphery, had not kept its promise.
The BBMP had assured the community that the number of trucks going to the landfill would be reduced every month, starting with 220 in November, 150 in December and 75 in January.
Mr. Goel conceded that the BBMP had failed to keep part of the assurances.
He said he would direct a Joint Commissioner to discuss the situation with the community members and try to resolve it. “On Monday, Mr. Murthy and I will meet the community leaders,” he added.
