Police have extended the imposition of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code in Mandur till midnight of June 10 as there is no breakthrough in the impasse between people living around the landfills and the BBMP.
B. Ramesh, Superintendent of Police, Bangalore Rural, said no untoward incident had been reported after Section 144 was imposed. Earlier in the day, villagers from Mandur and surrounding villages staged a protest against Chief Secretary Kaushik Mukherjee who reportedly stated that the agitation has been instigated by people with interests in real estate.
Srinivas Gowda from Mandur accused Mr. Mukherjee of being ignorant of the ground reality. “We are suffering and contracting diseases. Our women are reporting miscarriages,” he said. Meanwhile, garbage has been piling up across the city. Mayor B.S. Sathyanarayana conceded that garbage clearance has been hit.
The BBMP would clear the backlog in a couple of days
