A couple committed suicide by hanging themselves to death in their home near the Dattatreya Temple in Malleswaram.

The Vyalikaval police, who have registered a case, gave the names of the dead as Kavitha (19) and Senthil (26). The reason is yet to be ascertained.

The incident came to light on Sunday at around 9 a.m. when Senthil's father Krishna returned home from work. Mr. Krishna, who works as a security guard, said that he left for work at around 6 p.m. on Saturday.

He said that he knocked on the door and rang the calling bell several times. When there was no response from either Kavitha or Senthil, he peeked inside through a broken window pane and found the two hanging from the ceiling.

He managed to gain entry by breaking open the rear door of the house.

He said that the couple had got married around 10 months ago and were expecting their first baby. He said that Senthil was a car driver and the couple did not have any misunderstanding. Nagendra Prasad, a neighbour, said that the couple spoke to the neighbours cordially and were generally happy.

“They were last seen at around 9.30 p.m. on Saturday. They went inside their house when power supply was disrupted for a while. We got to know of the news this morning,” he said.

V. Jayakumar, a relative, said that the family members were all shocked. He also said that Mr. Krishna's wife was away in Chennai to attend a family function.

“Kavitha is Senthil's maternal uncle's daughter. It was an arranged marriage. There was no discord in the family,” he said.
