The Devanahalli police have arrested a 42-year-old man who went abroad after allegedly strangling his wife to death here in December last year.

The accused, Tuhin Mallik, a native of West Bengal, had come to Devanahalli in June 2012 after marrying Lucky Begum (22). Mallik, who was already married and had a 17-year-old boy from his first wife, had eloped with Lucky Begum.

While Lucky Begum joined a garment factory, Mallik was unemployed and used to demand money from his wife for his “vices”, police said.

The couple reportedly used to have frequent fights. On December 14, 2012, during an argument, Mallik allegedly slapped Lucky Begum, who slapped him back. Enraged by this, Mallik allegedly strangled her to death with her veil. He later tied the body to a chair and escaped, police said.

Neighbours, who noticed the foul smell, informed the landlord, who broke open the door to find the highly decomposed body of Lucky Begum.

The Devanahalli police, who took up a case of murder, were on the lookout for him.

Meanwhile, Mallik had escaped to his native place West Bengal from where he fled to Saudi Arabia on a work visa.

The police, who kept a tab on his movements, nabbed him when he returned to India and went to meet his friend in Kolar district.
