A 44-year-old man, under the influence of alcohol, died after falling into an open drain from a culvert under construction in Kadugondanahalli here early on Thursday. The culvert did not have parapet.

The K.G. Halli police said Devaraju, a mason, could have fallen between 3.30 a.m. and 5.30 a.m. The body was found in the drain in Shampur around 6 a.m. by autorickshaw drivers who alerted the police. Postmortem confirmed Devaraju was drunk. Poor lighting near the culvert might have contributed to the accident, the police said.

A Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike () official said: “The construction of the culvert was taken up around a year ago. We have completed 800 metres. Work on the junction and road widening is under progress. To maintain the drain's gradient, the road level had to be brought down.”
