Police patrolling the city’s streets on Monday night claim to have averted a double murder after apprehending a man from Bihar, who was in possession of a country-made pistol. The man had allegedly brought the pistol from Bihar to kill a mother-son duo in the city.
Two constables from Nandini Layout police station had put up a nakabandi on J C Nagar bridge on Monday night. Around 4 a.m., they flagged down an autorickshaw. Inside was a lone passenger carrying a bag. When one of the constables demanded to see the contents of the bag, the passenger fled. He was soon apprehended.
Cops found a country-made pistol in the bag. The man was arrested and the weapon seized. He was identified as Jayaprakash Umesh Singh (24) from Bihar, who used to run a mobile repair shop from rented premises in Parvathi Nagar, Rajagopalnagar.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) T R Suresh said that Singh vacated the premises six months ago, but had a dispute with the landlords. “Singh claimed that the landlords — Lalitha and her son Johnson — had refused to refund Rs 30,000 that he had paid as advance,” he said. Singh told the police that he bought the pistol from his friend Beerendra Yadav during his recent trip back home with the intention of scaring the mother-son duo.
A case has been registered against Singh for illegal possession of arms under the Indian Arms Act.
