Police say he was being treated for mental illness in Vellore for the past year

A man, who is being treated for mental illness, allegedly bludgeoned his 12-year-old daughter to death and then attempted suicide, at their house at Parappana Agrahara on Tuesday.

The girl, identified as B. Hemalatha, was the only daughter of Balaji and Kavita, who hailed from Vellore, Tamil Nadu. She was a class 6 student at a private school at Govindashettypalya in Parappana Agrahara.

Balaji has reportedly been treated at a private hospital in Vellore for the past year, and is unemployed. Kavita is part of the housekeeping staff at a private firm.

According to the Parappana Agrahara police, Balaji beat Hemalatha on the head with a ceiling fan that was kept in the corner of the room. He then consumed poison.

The incident came to light when Kavita, who had gone to work at 6 a.m. as usual, came home around noon worried after her phone calls at 8.30 a.m. and 11 a.m. got no response. She found her daughter lying in a pool of blood and her husband frothing at the mouth.

She raised the alarm and the two were shifted to a nearby hospital. Hemalatha was declared brought dead. Balaji is being treated at the hospital and is said to be in critical condition.

The Parapana Agrahara police have registered cases of murder and attempted suicide against Balaji and are investigating the matter.
