Residents of Malleswaram and Subramanyapura in the city can now wave goodbye to gyms and aerobics classes and yet have space to flex their muscles. Their local playground in Subramanyapura has gone hi-tech and turned into a full fledged stadium with space for several sporting events.
Speaking to presspersons here on Wednesday, Malleswaram MLA C.N. Aswathanarayan said the Sri Nadaprabhu Kempegowda playground has been developed into a stadium that has facilities for volleyball, football and basketball in addition to space for cricket. Apart from this, the playground has a synthetic athletic track and a skating rink, he added.
Stating that various lifestyle diseases were triggered owing to lack of physical exercise, Dr. Aswathnarayana said the stadium would provide an avenue for residents around the locality to exercise. “There is gallery space for the public to sit and watch the sporting events. There is no entry fee for people to use the facilities. But the trainers, who coach for various sports, will charge a nominal coaching fee.”
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has spent Rs. 1 crore and Brigade Group has spent Rs. 3.5 crore for the project, he added. The stadium will be inaugurated at 5 p.m. on Thursday by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
