Making ‘waiting time’ interesting

December 26, 2014 12:04 am | Updated 12:04 am IST

When the main guest for an event is late, the organisers have to scurry around for alternative measures to keep the audience engaged.

Recently, at a Christmas get-together, the compere resorted to inventing jokes that were funny due to their silliness.

Sample these: “For Kannada ‘jana’, January is a month of ‘worry’.” “How did the word lady get coined? The British heard Kannadiga husbands call their wives ‘le’ (lay) and the Tamilians say ‘di’ (dy).” While the audience humoured him with laughter for his brave attempts, the compere suddenly realised there were media persons and said, “This is all off-record. Please don’t quote me.”

That turned out to be the funniest of the lot.

Market mystery

Malleswaram market is frequented by hundreds of people every day. Traders of the market are a displeased lot, as the redevelopment of the market by BDA and BBMP has been on the cards for a while. However, despite opposition, the BBMP, which owns the market, has issued eviction notices and demolished a few shops. Recently, much to the surprise of many, in an advertisement in a popular Kannada evening paper, a Congress leader thanked the Chief Minister for dropping the redevelopment project. Curious, this reporter checked with officials of BBMP and BDA only to be told that no such decision had been taken. Strangely, even the Congress leader claimed ignorance. The mystery behind the ad still remains.
