BBMP Commissioner M. Lakshminarayan has assured Upa Lokayukta Subhash B. Adi that the repair of all major roads in the city will be completed within six months. The assurance came after Mr. Adi conducted a surprise inspection of Hosur and Viveknagar main roads on Tuesday.

Mr. Lakshminarayan also assured the Upa Lokayukta that on Thursday the BBMP will start demolition of illegal structures that have encroached parts of Hosur Road, impeding the road widening project.

“The widening work will start simultaneously with the demolition,” Mr. Adi said.

Mr. Adi also inspected the storm water drain at Madiwala, which the BWSSB plans to rid of sewage. “I have been assured that the bifurcation [sewage and rain water] of drains in the city will be completed by 2014,” he said.

Our country boasts of wealth of knowledge and expertise, even planning to go to the Moon. Its pathetic to see the roads getting washed out due to normal rains. Are applying any kind of technology and rationale thinking for road construction? As far as I see in many places repairing roads means dumping construction debris into the potholes or just plain dumping of Asphalt. These mediocre contractors do not follow any kind of procedures and with the support of local lawmakers they have become instruments of grabbing money. City roads need the same level of planning and execution similar to the highways. Its a pity to see the ignorance at all levels of execution.

My recommendation to the Commissioner is that he should not entrust the
road works to the existing municipal contractors who have no ethics nor
knowledge of quality road work. Is anyone ready to guarantee the work
for a decade?
