A gang of four men armed with machetes looking to kill two friends ended up injuring one of them and hacking to death one of the targets’ brother in broad daylight in Bangalore Monday.
The violent attacks took place in two adjoining areas — K.G. Halli and D.J. Halli — leaving residents shaken.
The dead youth is Mohammed Yaseen (22), the brother of Mohammed Ameen, who was waiting for the bus at the Govindapura junction around 10.15 a.m. to go to 13th Fast Track Court for the hearing a murder attempt case pending against him. Yaseen, a garment factory employee, had offered to accompany his older brother when the assailants came in two motorcycles and swooped down on the siblings.
Horror-struck passersby watched as the four men slashed Yaseen’s hand, shoulder, face and head with lethal weapons before fleeing. Ironically, Aseem escaped the attack. The grievously injured Yaseen was rushed to the Dr. Ambedkar Medical College and Hospital where he died.
An eerie silence prevailed in the area soon after the murder as shops down their shutters and residents locked themselves in to avoid police enquiry. Even as it left Yaseen mortally wounded, the gang headed towards Sultanpalya on KHB Road near R.T. Nagar and attacked Ameen’s friend Irfan (25) who was in his chicken shop. The attackers went for Irfan’s right shoulder, hand and head with a cleaver grabbed from the chicken stall.
Irfan also was taken to the same hospital where he is said to be out of danger.
The brothers’ family vent their ire against the police at the mortuary demanding immediate arrests. The K.G. Halli police picked up few people for questioning.
According to the police, Ameen is not only a criminal but also a police informer, tipping them off about the activities of Toufiq, a career criminal whose gang is involved in mugging in the area. Irfan had filed a complaint against Toufiq earlier.
