The Jnanabharati Police arrested the administrator of Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, on Friday in connection with the death of an 80-year-old man due to a technical snag in the lift of the hospital on Wednesday.

Praveen Valli was booked on the charge of death due to negligence and remanded in judicial custody. Sachidananda Murthy, a retired engineer from Chandra Layout, fell into the well of the lift after the doors opened without the lift cabin reaching the floor.

The police, in their investigation, found the lapse on part of the hospital management. “There was no lift operator and the management had not maintained the lift, which is used mainly by patients and senior citizens who visit the hospital,” a senior police officer investigating the case said.

The hospital has also not maintained the lift shaft. “We are waiting for the report of the technical team, based on which further course of the action would be taken,” the officer said.
